REd White and Blue by William Carl Bell
A Depiction by William Carl Bell of The American Flag called Red, White and Blue. Affectionately known as Old Glory, history records Captain William Driver, a shipmaster of Salem, Massachusetts, coined the term Old Glory in 1831 after some friends presented him with a 10-by-17-foot flag.
The artist captures the true beauty of the flag using as a backdrop a stucco wall. The wooden flag staff creates a dramatic effect of presenting a traditional scene when flags can be seen hanging on the porches of houses everywhere across our great land. Even the subtle detail at the edges of the stripes shows the stitching used to connect the rows. The use of bold colors creates a vibrant look that gives the whole work a naturalistic appeal to the senses.
Three elements create a double meaning in this work. The American red roses emphasize the red stripes while the white porch banister and white flag staff draw our attention to the white strips and stars. The blue birds draw us to the bed of blue the stars rest in.
The three blue birds create a virtual symbol of a triangle having three sides. There is a triangle formed with the flag staff and with the left side and top corner of the work. Another is below the banister while yet another is just above the banister. Triangles have a natural strength. A triangle will not change shape unless its sides are bent or extended or broken or if its joints break; basically, each of the three sides supports the other two. There is strength in those who unite under this flag.
The flag has thirteen stripes representing the original thirteen colonies. Fifty stars are in the corner on a bed of blue representing each state. The three colors, red, white and blue have specific meaning. The red stands for hardiness and valor. The white symbolizes purity and innocence. The blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice. The military folds the flag with 13 folds each with symbolic meaning.
